Road trips

Two route ideas along the coast

Distances are straight lines between the spots’ coordinates: the road is always longer. We give no driving times or road conditions; check them with a routing service before you go.

The Atlantic wind coast

From the lagoon of Oualidia south to the surf villages north of Agadir. The kite stops are in the northern half; the last two stops are surf spots, useful on days without wind.

Route sketch, not a road map.
  1. Stop 1 · 32.74° N · 9.04° W

    Oualidia

Lagoon village with calm water and an ocean beach; lighter wind than Essaouira, Tarfaya or Dakhla in the data.

↓ ≈ 135 km as the crow flies to Moulay Bouzerktoun

  2. Stop 2 · 31.64° N · 9.68° W

    Moulay Bouzerktoun

Wave spot with strong wind, for experienced riders only: waves, rocks and currents.

↓ ≈ 18 km as the crow flies to Essaouira

  3. Stop 3 · 31.50° N · 9.77° W

    Essaouira

The “Wind City of Africa”: a long sandy bay and a northerly summer trade wind.

↓ ≈ 16 km as the crow flies to Sidi Kaouki

  4. Stop 4 · 31.36° N · 9.80° W

    Sidi Kaouki

Long, exposed beach with a white marabout, used for both surf and kite.

↓ ≈ 55 km as the crow flies to Imsouane

  5. Stop 5 · 30.84° N · 9.82° W

    Imsouane(surf spot)

Fishing village with a long right-hand point break: a surf destination with lighter wind.

↓ ≈ 35 km as the crow flies to Taghazout

  6. Stop 6 · 30.54° N · 9.71° W

    Taghazout(surf spot)

Surf village with almost no kiteable wind in the data. Listed so you don’t plan a kite trip around it.

Total, straight line
≈ 265 km
Best months (kite stops)
July (65%), August (53%), May (50%)

Average share of days ≥ 12 knots across the kite stops (Essaouira and Moulay Bouzerktoun counted once: same grid cell).

  • Moulay Bouzerktoun is for experienced riders only (waves, rocks, currents). Beginners should ride in Essaouira with a school instead.
  • Essaouira works as a base: Supratours and CTM buses link it to Marrakech, and most visitors arrive through Marrakech (RAK) or Agadir (AGA) airports, or Essaouira’s own small airport (ESU).
  • Imsouane and Taghazout are surf stops: the wind data there is light (Imsouane) to almost nil (Taghazout).

The deep south: Tarfaya to Dakhla

The two windiest spots in the dataset, far apart on the southern coast. The distance between them is large, and Dakhla has its own airport, so each can also be a trip on its own.

TarfayaDakhla
Route sketch, not a road map.
  1. Stop 1 · 27.94° N · 12.93° W

    Tarfaya

Southern town near Cap Juby, linked to Saint-Exupéry. Among the windiest summers in the dataset.

↓ ≈ 545 km as the crow flies to Dakhla

  2. Stop 2 · 23.80° N · 15.85° W

    Dakhla

Long peninsula and a ~40 km lagoon: flat water inside, ocean spots outside, and the windiest numbers in the dataset.

Total, straight line
≈ 545 km
Best months (kite stops)
July (91%), June (80%), August (79%)

Average share of days ≥ 12 knots across the kite stops.

  • Dakhla has its own airport (VIL). For Tarfaya, the nearest airport in our list is Laâyoune Hassan I (EUN).
  • Dakhla’s lagoon offers flat water; we have not verified Tarfaya’s riding conditions, so ask locally.
  • Tarfaya: Laayoune Hassan I International Airport (EUN) ≈ 95 km as the crow flies
  • Dakhla: Dakhla Airport (VIL) ≈ 12 km as the crow flies
